Do you know… What SCUBA stands for?
We all know the word SCUBA. Most people — even non-divers — have heard it somewhere before, but very few actually know what it stands for.
Since I started diving as a kid, I’ve asked many divers this same question, and most of them had no idea. The answer is actually quite simple:
SCUBA stands for “Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.”
It refers to the equipment that allows divers to breathe underwater independently, without being connected to a surface air supply.
The modern concept of scuba diving equipment was developed in the early 1950s, with important contributions from innovators such as Major Christian J. Lambertsen, who played a key role in developing early underwater breathing systems around 1952.
Today, SCUBA diving has evolved into a widely practiced activity that allows people to explore the underwater world safely, freely, and independently — something that was once impossible without heavy or limited equipment.
